National White Cane Safety Awareness Day is October 15, 2026. The Washington branch Lions Club in conjunction with this day, are sponsoring a walk to promote safety for our visually impaired community, encourage a healthy lifestyle and physical activity for those living with vision loss and to provide an opportunity for sighted people to better understand the challenges of blindness, ways to help and interact with some amazing people that have flourished in the midst of adversity! In addition to the walk, there will be resource tables on the front lawn of brown library with various organizations, providing information, vision screenings, lessons in orientation and mobility that include being blindfolded and sighted individuals getting the opportunity to be guided by someone else and to switch roles. During the walk you may choose to be a guide for someone who needs a guide that’s visually impaired or has chosen to wear a blindfold for the walk. You may also walk independently if you choose. The cost of the walk is $20 before October 1. If you register by the early registration deadline, you are guaranteed a T-shirt. If you wait until the day of the event, late registration is at 8:30 AM and the cost is $25 and you may or may not get a T-shirt. The supplies are limited. If you do not wish to walk, you are welcome to browse the tables on the front lawn of the library and learn more about vision loss and prevention There will also be opportunities to buy baked goods and crafts created by the hands of our visually impaired and blind community. Some organizations will have raffles and other items for purchase. This is a community outreach and fundraising event sponsored by the Washington Branch Lions Club.
